Course description:
The
goal of this course is to study the architecture, design, and implementation of
dataplane-programmable network switches, and the challenging issues involved in
developing their applications for production networks. We will first introduce
controlplane-programmable SDN/OpenFlow switches and then spend most of our time
in studying dataplane-programmable P4 switches, which are much more powerful and
advanced and are the successors to SDN/OpenFlow switches.
With
the availability of P4 switches, now more complex computation can be performed
in the pipelines of network switches at the 100 Gbps line rate. This new
capability recently has created a new emerging “In-Network Computing” research
field, which makes a network more intelligent and efficient.
In
this course, a student will take two hands-on lab experiments and read a list
of high-quality P4 research papers to know how to fully exploit the great
potentials of dataplane-programmable network switches.
Each
student taking this course will need to fully study an assigned paper, orally
present it in the class, and answer questions raised by the teacher and other
students.
In
the classes, students should actively participate in the discussions of the
papers presented by other students.
Each
student will need to conduct a P4 research project (one or two students form a
group to conduct a project), orally present the results of the project in the
class, and submit a 10-page written report.
Prerequisite:
“Introduction to Computer Networks”
The
course meets on Tuesdays from 3:30 pm to 4:20 pm and on Fridays from 10:10 am
to 12:00 pm noon, in ED102 room.
